Corolla does over 1000 km in 50-litre challenge!
The people at an online magazine called Canadian Driver and "Motoring 2008" (a TV program) conducted an experiment to see how far cars could travel on 50 litres of fuel.
The Toyota Corolla came out tops against 12 other vehicles in the same price range (compact sedans and hatchbacks), having travelled a staggering 1,017 km on a single tank! They drove for 19 hours; and 188 km of the distance travelled happened after the petrol light went on.
Organisers of this study tried to emulate real-world conditions as much as possible. They drove through a looped course around Ontario, changed drivers every 100 km (different weights), and "drivers even braked for chipmunks on the road".
Read more about this fascinating experiment over at CTV.ca and also check out the comments section for doubters of the validity of the study (what's new), amongst other opinions.

18.5 kilometer per liter
Sounds impossible BUT you can get that by driving VERY lightly. I measured 18.5 at a constant speed of 100 km/h coming down to 80 on uphills and releasing the accelerator downhills (Speed picked up to 110 at stages downhill). To my surprise the average speed, limited town traffic and open road, was 96 km/h. This was measured over a distance of around 500 kilometres through the Karoo.Took a picture as not to be called a liar. Will MMS to anyone interested.
Fuel consumption on 1.8 Advance?
I am considering buying the 1.8 Advance. What is a realistic average fuel consumption figure for the specific model?
Fuel on 1.8 Advance
I got a 1.8 Exclusive, but this shouldn't make a difference.
But it is an automatic.
The fuel consumption I get varies from 6.4l/100km to 7.2l/100km. Depends if the aircon is in use.
The manual, depends how you drive it, should be lighter on petrol.
I say, go ahead and buy the vehicle.
:)
fuel consumption
The as far as I can remember it's 7.9L/100km on average driving, what one must remember is that it varies according to your driving habit.
Re: Fuel Consumption 1.8 Exclusive 2008
I recently brought a 1.8 Exclusive Corolla automatic.
The fuel consumption I obtain is 6.4l/100km to 7.2l/100km.
Depends if the aircon is on.
Amazing this car is really light on petrol. Most of the time, the gears change at around 3000rpm, which you get fairly good speed.
inconsistent fill up for fuel
It is bad enough to rely on one inconsistent fill up for fuel used, but these guys seem to be relying on manufacturers' tank spec, so cars with slightly bigger tanks, bigger filler pipes have an advantage. Until they man up and use something to properly measure fuel used, these tests are borderline useless.
This is a really great news
This is a really great news especially to Corolla drivers like me!
