Corolla is second most selling car range in December

The Corolla range, along with the Verso and Auris, are second in the top ten most selling passenger cars in December. The Toyota Yaris moved up by 23% and leads the list having sold 3 357 units and Corolla/Verso/Auris 2 833 units.

Overall, new car sales have taken a decline of a collective 15% as compared to December 2006. In 2006, 119 171 units were sold but 2007 cooled in sales to 106 485, a 11% difference.

Other Toyotas on the top-selling passenger cars list are the 3-series Fortuner and the Avanza at 7th and 9th positions, respectively.

On another note, a winner on the popular US game show Jeopardy! (where they answer questions with questions) saw him walk away with $171 902 making him the fourth "winningest" player of the show. The relevancy is that the first thing he bought was a Corolla! He clearly continues to make great choices :)

Worst looking corolla yet!

The new Corolla is the worst looking corolla yet. The car I presume was designed from the front to the back. The front of the car has an excellent look, but as it goes to the the rear, something went wrong. I think the designer must have felt sleepy. The rear lights are ridiculous. The huge reflectors in the bumper is an eyesore, and the rear bumper has a weird shape. Take a cue from the new Audi A4, to be released in April 2008, or the existing BMW 3 series. The rear lights on the Toyota Fortuner, would have looked better on the new Corolla. I own a 180 GSX (A) Toyota Corolla and was wanting to change my car for the new Corolla, but I am greatly disappointed. If I could afford the Toyota Lexus, I would not mind settling for one. This is a much better looking car. Please give the Toyota Corolla a facelift or else, it may not be the best selling car during December 2008.

The new Corrola

I can't agree more, i personally do have much against the shape, my MAIN problem is the tail lights. one wonders what really went wrong. i think even tail lights from the the 'Yaris' can look better.

Hate to admit it but I agree

I love my Corolla that I bought three years ago and now that it is time to replace it I can't bring myself to get the new shape. Everytime I would go to the garage - the terrible rear end would be the first thing I would see. It's heartbreaking.

Hate to admit it but I agree

Wake up Toyota.... highest selling doesn't mean the best, because clothes from Mr price is not better than Woolworths. It almost looks like a "facelifted" Almera. It seems,Toyota don't sell cars because of their shape, but because of their reliability. The Toyota Corolla, looks good from the front, but the back looks too much like the old Nissan Almera. The Corolla is now the perfect old man's car, no performance, no style, just reliable.

SA Price vs US Price

I find it extremely hard to see why we pay so much for cars. I just visited the US toyota site. And the Corolla there stars from just over $15,000. The price equates to just under R115,000.00. Now keep in mind that their basic model is an 1.8 as opposed to SA which is 1.4. Can anyone give me a good reason for this please... It is such a shame!!!

SA Price vs US Price

Pricing strategies of vehicles differ from market to market or country to country because of a number of factors such as specifications, production input costs, exchange rate. Therefore, you will find that similar cars, in this case Corolla, will be priced differently moreover if you convert the price into rands. Australian vs USA vs Japan vs SA Corolla carry the same name but are specced differently hence a difference in price. Price difference does not only happen with Toyota vehicles but with other international brands sold in SA.

Compare apples with apples!

Emotions and finance don't go hand in hand, plus focusing only on the CAPEX and putting a blind eye on OPEX is even worse. You should be happy if you pay slightly more because you will reap the fruits at the end of the car use. If you need cheap/so called less priced, get a midiocre like the Fords, VW but be prepared to pay more later.

To those who say the new corrola is ugly/or whatever word they use, here is my advice: Let your money work for you and not the otherway round, if you need something of beuaty, get a nice wife/girlfriend (at least you have minimum 10 yrs gaurentee). cars forcus on what works and what does not. In anyway, one man's meat is another poison.

Compare apples with apples!

Dear: The toyota way fan :

Please note that I have a beautiful wife and I need a good looking car to compliment her. I do not have a problem with the reliability of the corolla. I just do not like the shape of the new corolla. It does not mean that the customer must accept any "funny" looking shape of car from a manufacturer, just because their cars are reliable. It is time to speak out and demand the best. If you took the corolla engine and inserted same into a BMW 3 series, I wouldn't mind rushing out to buy one.

Corolla 2.0 Diesel D-4D

Any comments on this vehicle?? please pass on impressions.

Corolla 2.0 D-4D

The diesel version makes this car a dream to drive especially with the 6th gear, BUT...I still have a few problems with this vehicle.
This is my first Toyota and I'm still not sure if I made the right choice.

My first full tank of Diesel made such a noise that I drove straight back to the dealer for their comments. Two technical guys in front and two sales people in the back driving my car to an fro in the workshop trying to figure where the noise originates from. This only happens when the fuel tank is full. (??) From there they booked the vehicle for the full day only to tell me at the end of the day that Toyota SA will get back to me.

5 Weeks later, still waiting. The rear view mirror vibrates badly, the boot closes at the 3rd attempt, and the bad layout of the trip computer doesn't help either. Great respect for Toyota, but my next vehicle won't be from them.

Worst looking Corolla

Unfortunately, I have to agree, the new Toyota is “ok” from the front and sides, but is really, really ugly from the back.
I’ve always been a Corolla fan (owned a 2002 GLS, and currently drive a 2006 GLE), but, as much as I’d like to stick with the Corolla, there is no way I’ll be buying one when I’m ready to trade in at the end of next year. The back is really too hideous for words, and its usually the part of the car you see the most as you approach it from the back when its in the garage, a parking bay etc.
I was very keen to upgrade to the 1.8 Auto, but now I’m seriously looking at a Honda Civic, or a low-km second hand Subaru Forester ... they would all be in the same price range...

Worst Looking Corolla

The more I look at the rear of the new Toyota Corolla, the more I hate it. I thought that I would eventually get used to the "ugly" lights, but I just cannot come to accept it. Please restyle the taillights or the Consumer will buy other brands that are more pleasing to the eye, eg. VW Jetta. Take a look at the new Toyota Aurion. I am impressed with the taillights. Use this as an example of what is required.

Issues with my New Corolla

Hi All

just bought myself a new 1.6 Professional and have a few comments, here goes:

1. Build quality on this car is poor to say the least, I previously owned a 2004 160i GLE A/T and that was quality. this car rattles, high wind noise and the car is only on 5000km

2. The Dials: I presume that the team that designed this did not even both looking at the previous corolla ie. it has a dial in the speedo that has all the information, but you can only view 2 items at a time. With the old corolla, the time, outside temp, fuel consumer etc was on the radio and you could view everything at once with touching anything. With the new one, you have to press this button each time you want to see this info (and no back only forward option, so if you miss the option...click click click... until it comes by again) the button to change it is very similar to that of resetting the trip meters and lies just below the rev counter, a very inconvenient place.

3. drivers door pad: cannot put my finger on it, but something is extremely wrong here, the door pad/ window line is too high and makes resting your hand on the door pad extremely uncomfortable (whilst holding the steering). i had tried adjusting the steering etc, but just cannot find a comfortable position. (i do many trips to dbn). after 20 minutes I get pins and needles.

4. Power steering: what a pleasure in the city, but cannot understand why this steering is still soo sensitive at high speeds, I mean it feels like I still have full power steering at 120km/h and above. Couple this with not being able to find a comfortable spot for your hand to rest on during long distance, is a recipe for disaster.

5. Finally, my high revving corolla, this is a frustrating one. i live in pta and work in jhb, this car gives me excellent consumption ie around 14.5km/l to work and back. however my commute to durban is a different story, at speed of 140km/h, the car is screaming for a 6th gear (unfortunately 6 speed only available in 1.8petrol and 2.0diesel), so this car sits on around 4 400 rpm. here my consumption drops to 12 km/l. needless to say, my old corolla albeit a bit under powered (it was a 1.6 auto) got better consumption and made it to dbn in a one tank of fuel (3/4 tank to be precise), the new one doesn't even come close ie the reserve light/alert comes on entering Marianhill.

All in all, this corolla pails in comparsion to my other corolla's (2001 160i gl, 2003 140igle and 2004 160igle auto).

Verdict: If you are considering this car, make sure that you are satisfied with it before even signing the documents, take it for a long drive etc. I do have to mention though, this car is extremely nippy for such a bulky car.

Corolla Issues - Interesting ...

Thanks for some really useful feedback. I think this just confirms my decision that I probably will not buy another Toyota when I'm due for a new car at the end of next year.

I've always been Corolla fan, but if I'm honest, it’s probably their marketing hype! My old 2002 Corolla 1.6 GLS had a problem (supposedly with the idle control valve) that Toyota could not repair. Its idled too fast (intermittently), and after Toyota played around swopping parts (at my expense of over R6000) without success, I eventually traded the car in. Just before I did, the alternator packed up.

My current Corolla 160GLE (2006) has at least 3-4 separate, very irritating buzzes and noises from the dash and centre console. The cubby-hole door doesn’t fit nicely and rattles. A bolt on the rear suspension keeps sheering off (its been replaced twice) which makes the car make a "popping" noise when I go round corners. The handbrake makes a grating noise, and the clutch "judders" when pulling off in first. I've twice reported these problems (at the 15k and 30k service) and been told that everything is "in spec" by 2 different dealers.

I’d love to stay a Corolla fan, because I really *want* to like them. Mechanically my current car has been 100% fine, and I get very good fuel consumption (7.9l/100 average, about 8.2 in town, and as low as 6 on a trip to Durban). I love the "normal" dash layout and crisp white lighting at night.

But the new Corolla is butt-ugly from the back, the side doors are too high, the trip computer sounds like a nightmare, the optoron instruments suck, and from what I’ve just read, quality is lacking. Yip, that Subaru (even if 2nd hand) is looking more and more tempting...

Seems to me we have a severe

Seems to me we have a severe case of “1st installment blues”, I have been driving Corollas since the 90’s and this is the most define and functional model ever. I would recommend this shape to anyone with a “Mercedes taste but a Toyota budget”!

new corolla

new corolla is best ever, but the exclusive models needs to be exclusive, being the interior does not have anything fancy, even the hand brake, the Auris has a much exclusive one than the corolla. the sound system is standard and vibrates when loud. the exterior door and bumper protectors are sold as accessories, when it should be standard. Other manufacturers like Honda in its class comes standard for its price.

Legends

I agree with the guys that say Toyota has now made cars for the old man.

Previous cars were legends, i.e: Cressida 3.0i Twincam 24, GLI 6
Corolla Gli Twincam 16, 180i GSE, GSX and the all beauty 20 valve RXi revving to 8200rpm. etc.....

These cars where beautiful, and they sounded good. why all of a sudden they stopped? they where also reliable. Nowadays you get the wrong impression of them. Bring back those models Toyota I would buy them. I drive a 1993 Corolla GLE. It's still running strong.

Overseas we have the Supra and Celica, street racers built by Toyota yet its not brought into the country, to compete with Nissan, Subaru and the like. CEO Johan van Zyl needs to stop smoking the paint from the factory and fostering his old age into making decisions of what cars to bring in, based on it.

People think only BMW made smooth straight 6 motors. Toyota Cressida engines had that smoothness long before BMW perfected theirs and all of a sudden they stopped it. Pathetic. BMW is only good in that because they continuously improved it .
Oh well we will see if maybe somebody will try and change this.

No Surprise

Definitely no surprises - the Corolla is always popular for those looking for a reliable and economical car. And fleet sales too!

Corolla should bring

Corolla should bring the Avensis to India…it's bigger than the Corolla. It should also bring the SUVs it offers in the US like the Highlander which are much more cheaper than the Cruiser. There is a big market for SUVs in India like the international trend but they become double the price here due to duties. They should start assembling them here rather bringing them as CBU’s.

Get a life

Dear Toyota SA

I am extremely frustrated that you have decided not to bring out the 1.8 VERSO with a new MMT box. The vehicle is excellent and has, I think to become what the old Camry was. It has space has great fuel consumption figures and is comfortable and just the right price.

You should listen to your customers. I need to change my VERSO because it is going on 5 years old and for tax purposes but what do I buy now? Perhaps I should head off to another vehicle manufacturer after driving a Toyota since 1986.

Frustrated

Bio data

Unfortunately, I have to agree, the new Toyota is “ok” from the front and sides, but is testking 156-315 really, really ugly from the back.
I’ve always been a Corolla fan (owned a 2002 GLS, and currently drive a 2006 GLE), but, as much as I’d like to stick with the Corolla, there is no way I’ll be buying one when I’m ready to trade in at the testking CISM end of next year. The back is really too hideous for words, and its usually the part of the car you see the most as you approach it from the back when its in the garage, a parking bay etc.
I was very keen to upgrade to the testking 0B0-106 1.8 Auto, but now I’m seriously looking at a Honda Civic, or a low-km second hand Subaru Forester ... they would all be in the same price range...
