Toyota introduces pre-crash safety features

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has announced the development of pre-crash safety technology which detects probable collisions and automatically makes several adjustments to the interior of the car to protect passengers.

The Front-side Pre-crash Safety System uses radar to detect any cars or obstacles moving into the vehicle’s path, and if there is a high probability of a collision, safety functions within the car are activated:

  • When the system picks up that there might be an accident, an alarm is sounded, which could possibly assist the driver in averting the crash through early braking or steering.
  • When the driver steps on the brakes, Pre-Crash Brake Assist applies additional braking force.
  • Motor-powered seatbelts immediately restrain the passengers.
  • Depending on whether a front or rear collision is detected, all seats in the car automatically move either upwards to downwards – into a position in which seatbelts and airbags can have maximum effect.

Toyota introduces world’s first rear seat centre airbag

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) continues to make strides in safe vehicle technology with the development of the world’s first rear seat centre air bag.

World's 1st Rear-seat Center Airbag by Toyota

Soon to be launched in Japan, the airbag is fitted in a fixed rear seat centre console, and when the vehicle is hit on the side, the airbag deploys, acting as a barrier. The positioning of the rear seat centre air bag helps minimise injuries to back seat passengers.

This is just one of the many ongoing initiatives which form part of TMC’s Integrated Safety Management Concept. The organisation also takes part in a number of initiatives aimed at creating a safer traffic environment.

World’s 1st rear window curtain shield airbag

Rear window curtain shield airbag

Toyota has developed the world’s first SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) rear window curtain shield airbag to protect rear passengers’ heads in the event of a rear-end collision.

"The airbag deploys from the roof lining above the rear window in the form of a curtain-like barrier. Together with the headrests, the airbag minimizes impact to the head from a colliding vehicle or parts of the hit vehicle, thus helping to reduce the severity of injuries."

If you've been paying attention to Toyota news you'll also be aware of other available collision safety technologies - resulting in such achievements as the swift market introduction of SRS curtain shield and knee airbags - to enable its vehicles to better respond to a greater range of accidents.

Just one more way that Toyota = safety :)
