Fuel levy not going away, gov't decides

Lately, any mention of fuel prices gives most of us the jitters. R100 worth of petrol hardly gets that fuel gauge needle excited and seems to evaporate from your tank in no time.

Today's headlines don't bring any more relief as the cabinet has decided that fuel levies will stay. This follows an announcement by Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica that a reduction in the fuel levies would be discussed with Trevor Manuel.

It was explained that levies are a specific tax and not a percentage so they were unaffected by fuel price change. Levies typically stay the same throughout a full year. The current levy is 111c on diesel and 127c/l on petrol.

Tips on how to save on fuel

Every time there's an announcement about fuel prices I can almost feel my wallet getting tighter and vow to make less unnecessary trips. On the AA site it shows that unleaded 93 started a 584 c/l, up to 711 in June and a slight decrease to 690 this month. A similar tend is exhibited in other fuel types.
